CUET mandatory for all undergraduate course admissions, class 12 scores will no longer be considered

As per University Grants Commission (UGC), now onwards admission of students into undergraduate(UG) courses will be done based on Common University Entrance Test (CUET) instead of  class 12 board examination marks . CUET is compulsory for 45 central universities from academic session 2022-23. The chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC)  M.Jagadesh Kumar  had mentioned that CUET will be conducted in the first week of July and the admission in all the 45 central universities will have to be done based on the marks scored in the entrance test. This decision has been taken in order to provide equal opportunity to students and this also reduces their burden of appearing in multiple competitive exams.

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) is not a new concept, previously it was known as CUCET. It is a computerised test advocated under National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). By the academic year 2021-22 around 12 universities such as University Of Karnataka, University Of Kerala,, etc,  had already adopted CUET for the admission process. However the universities have all the liberty to decide the eligibility criteria for admission. As this common entrance test is likely to be conducted in the month of July, the CUET application window will be open from 2nd April, 2022 till 30th April, 2022. Following the examination a merit list will be prepared by NTA based on which the university admissions will take place.

About the test

The time allotted for the test will be three-and-half hours where the students will have to answer multiple choice questions carefully as there would be negative marking for each incorrect answer. The exam pattern is divided into three main segments - the first part will check the student’s knowledge and ability in language chosen by them, second part might consist of domain specific questions while the third part would focus on general ability.

Language section is further divided into 2 parts- section 1A and 1B. Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Guajarati, Urdu, Assamese, Bengali, Punjabi and Odia these 13 language papers fall under section-1A. Apart from mandatory languages there are additional 19 languages in section -1B such as German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Persian, Arabic, Sindhi, Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, Santhali, Manipuri, Nepali, Tibetan, Japanese and Chinese.  So students aiming at graduation in a particular language have to choose a language paper form 1B. They can select a maximum of three languages as per their interest from section 1A and 1B together.

The second part, which is domain specific, has 27 subjects and the students have to take up at least 1 subject and can choose a maximum of 6 subjects out of 27. It consists of standard subjects like biology, chemistry, physics, accounts, sociology etc which are a part of high school education. Referring to NCERT could help students to score good in this part. The final part will have questions on general aptitude including general knowledge, current affairs, quantitative reasoning, logical and analytical reasoning. The CUET will not affect the existing admission and reservation policies of colleges. The universities can enrol students for both general seats and reserved seats on the basis of CUET scores. In case of foreign students, there is an exemption on CUET and admission will be done as per existing practice the university has on a supernumerary basis.

This common entrance test will act as a single platform which makes the admission process easier. The students can focus on preparing for one common examination rather than multiple entrance examinations to get admitted in the desired universities and colleges. This also reduces their financial burden.  Hence making CUET compulsory is a very effective move.
