Chemistry
Chemistry is the study of all matter. Chemists are scientists who study, analyze and experiment with the composition, structure and properties of chemicals, as well as their interactions with each other and with living organisms. They carefully observe natural processes such as combustion or photosynthesis in order to learn more about how molecules react to one another.
Chemistry is also used in many industries such as agriculture and manufacturing. Chemists will produce new products like paints or plastics that enable people to create new materials without having to worry about developing a natural resource like oil or copper into a resource that can be exploited for commercial purposes.
Origin of Chemistry
The study of chemistry in modern times started in the early 19 th century, although it can be said that there is knowledge which has existed in one form or another throughout history. As far as the ancient world is concerned, chemistry has a long history and many ancient Greek philosophers believed that the elements were made from stars and mixed into earth on a regular basis. The alchemist Paracelsus was an important figure for the development of chemistry, who combined many natural substances together to create medicines. Paracelsus rejected Aristotles view of mixtures (octet) and his theory of four elements (earth, air, fire, water). To him, nature took shapes that were dependent on their atomic composition.
Contribution of Alchemists to Modern Chemistry
Although the modern concept of chemistry did not exist in the time of Paracelsus, it was beginning to emerge. Alchemists believed that there was a way to change one metal into another metal, which would make them gold in theory. However, because they were unable to make gold, they had not progressed enough to become scientists who could understand matter on a molecular level. Paracelsus showed that some metals were more valuable than others and later alchemists discovered that tin and copper can be made with antimony and lead. In fact, certain families of chemicals such as thallium actually did transform into lead, proving that alchemy worked under the right conditions.
In addition, chemists in the 19th century made major strides in understanding atomic theory. Many scientists contributed to this theory and the first person to coin the term atom was John Dalton in 1803. Daltons atomic theory was simple and easy to understand, as he believed that there could only be two states of matter: solid or liquid. When a substance was heated or cooled, it changed into a different state of matter. In an attempt to simplify his theory Dalton stated that there were only two kinds of atoms: those with no charge (neutral atoms) and those with a positive charge (cations). However, this meant that some neutral atoms had cations within them and thus became a part of the definitions for an atom.
Question: What are some of the models of an atom proposed by different scientists?
Answer: Some of the models of the atom are Rutherford Model of an Atom, Niels Bohr Model of an atom, etc. To study in deep about these models of an atom, visithttps://youtube.com/channel/UCoqI7C9rI2UbFPITF2bPgnQ.
Examples of Modern Chemistry
Chemistry is widely used in our everyday lives. Here, are some of the examples of modern chemistry knowledge that we use in our day-to-day lives.
Clothing
Clothing materials come from many different sources, most of which are natural. This industry also uses chemistry in order to help produce better quality clothing.
Laundry detergents use a chemical compound called an alkali to absorb oils and odors from dirty clothes. Detergent helps separation because it makes water more flexible. The molecules of detergent molecules break apart bigger molecules found in the clothes and cells that help clean the clothes before they are washed down the drain or drained into a bucket.
Transportation
Chemistry is even used in transportation. The fuel that provides power to a car is a chemical called gasoline. Although the obvious purpose of the vehicle is to get from one place to another, there are other chemicals involved in the process. Car engines use two chemicals: gasoline and air. Combining these two elements produces energy that can be used for travel. The heat produced by this reaction creates motion and pushes the car down the road as long as there is oxygen available to react with.
Farming
Chemistry is involved in farming such as the production of fertilizers. The fertilizer is made from chemicals that provide food for plants, which promotes growth and improves the yield of many crops.
Health Care
Chemists use a variety of chemicals to help with various functions in the body, such as preventing or treating diseases, or providing nutrients and even boosting immune systems. Medicine is a chemical compound that is made from elements, which act as drugs in order to help treat illnesses. Drugs may help stop pain or boost your immune system against an illness such as a cold or flu virus.
Importance of Experiments in chemistry
Research methods vary depending on the scientists purpose and the knowledge that is required for each project. Since many scientists are involved, research may be performed by one group of scientists or, in some cases, by an all-inclusive team of scientists. In chemistry projects, there are several research methods that can be used. One of the most common and useful of these is experimentation.
Experiments are used in chemistry as a way to determine the validity of a hypothesis. The results of any experiment can be drawn as conclusions to prove or disprove a hypothesis. In order for an experiment to be valid, all factors that may affect its outcome must be taken into consideration and kept constant. This process is called controlling variables, and without them it is easy for the results of an experiment to vary for a number of different reasons.
In recent times, controlled experiments have been conducted by chemists on subjects such as chemical reactions and how temperature affects these reactions. When performing experiments, results can be classified into either control or nondependent variables.
Question: What are some of the chemical experiments that have been conducted in the past?
